Mostafa, Harby; El-Ansary, Mohamed; Awad, Montaser; Husein, Nora.
An experiment was performed for two seasons to test the impact of water stress and drip irrigation lateral arrangements on yield and water productivity of the sunflower crop (seed and oil). Water stress treatments were Full crop evapotranspiration 100% ETc (FI100), 80% ETc (DI80), 60%ETc (DI60) and 100-60 % ETc (DI100-60). The DI100-60 treatment was applied as 100 % ETc up to seed formation then reduced to 60% ETc. The drip irrigation lateral arrangements were single planting row per one drip line with 2 L h-1 drippers (T1) and double planting rows per one drip line with 4 L h-1 drippers (T2). Results revealed that applying water stress by either DI80 or DI100-60 produced almost the same or more yield of sunflower seeds and oil than that obtained from full...

Water Uptake in Brown Rice during Soaking for Production of No-cooking Rice CIGR Journal
Hazarika, Manuj K.
Water uptake behavior of brown rice during soaking as a part of the process of producing ‘Komal Chawal’, a kind of no cooking rice tradition to the population in the State of Assam, India, is modelled to Fick’s diffusion equation. Grain swelling resulting from water uptake is accounted by the moving boundary formulation. The model is applied to hydration data of brown rice at soaking temperatures of 40 – 65oC, with saturation moisture content estimated from experimental hydration data. Dependence of effective diffusivity on temperature and moisture content is expressed as a factor estimated from enthalpy-entropy compensation of moisture sorption behavior. Model fitting yielded values of effective diffusivity in a range 2.48 x 10-11 – 1.21 x 10-10 m2/s....

Wear on circular orifice plate of hollow-cone type agrochemical spray nozzles CIGR Journal
KUMAR SINGH, AKSHAY; Bhatt, Yogesh Chandra.
An orifice plate of spray nozzles changes pressurized agrochemical liquid spray into the finer droplets in order to accomplish application of pesticide on to the field crops. Application rate of pesticide per unit area (L/ha) is an important pre-defined parameter for a particular crop which is governed by the combined effect of flow rate per unit of time (L/min.) and the time of cover the unit area (hr/ha). The study has revealed the failures of orifices of hollow-cone nozzles, due to wear, to obey the constant rate of discharge of liquid pesticides with the usage of time. Hollow-cone nozzles with different materials of constructions (plastic, stainless steel and ceramic) were tested under the pressure of 3.5, 7.0, and 10.5 kg-cm-2 respectively. Material...

Width Prediction of a Side Circular Crescent Failed by a Tillage Tool in a Sandy Clay Loam CIGR Journal
Kasisira Lukoda Levi; duPlessis Ronnie.
Some of the mathematical force models employing limit equilibrium analysis are based on the soil-volume tilled to predict the draft requirements of a tillage tool. At the same time, such models require a preliminary assumption of the soil failure pattern ahead of the tool. It is imperative therefore to accurately determine the dimensions of the idealized soil-failure model to ensure accurate prediction of the soil-volume tilled and thus the tillage-tool draft requirements. Among the commonly idealized models, is the model that divides the soil failure ahead of a simple tillage tool into a center wedge and a side circular crescent on each side of the tool. However, the available model for determining the maximum width of the side circular crescent was found...

Wireless Channel Path-Loss Modelling for Agricultural and Vegetation Environments: A Survey CIGR Journal
Narayanan, Gayathri; Kurup, Dhanesh.
This work undertakes an extensive survey of the channel modelling methods and path-loss characterization carried out in agricultural fields and vegetation environments in an attempt to study the state-of-the-art in this field, which, though vastly explored, still presents extremely diverse opportunities and challenges. The interface for communication between nodes in a typical agricultural field is the wireless channel or air interface, making it imperative to address the impairments that are exclusive to such a communication scenario by studying the characteristics of the medium. The performance of the channel is a direct indicator of the quality of communication. It is required to have a lucid understanding of the channel to ensure quality in...

X-By-Wire via ISOBUS Communication Network CIGR Journal
M. Ehrl; H. Auernhammer.
Satellite based guidance technology is a very challenging principle for future automation of agricultural machinery. The first generation types of systems are primarily self-contained solutions and added to the existing system set-up of the tractor. As being an important step towards robotics in agricultural machines, a better integration of this technology into the mechanical, hydraulic and especially the electronic architecture is a major issue. In principle, there are two main strategies for the integration. One is a concept based on a proprietary, manufacturer specific approach. The other one is to map as many functions as possible into the just state of the art becoming open and standardized ISOBUS. Within this paper, the capabilities of ISOBUS to be...
